    Trading Post Cafe is nondescript from the outside but the restaurant is excellent. We ordered the flounder special - served with fresh spinach and Valencia sauce. Really fantastic. Tried the house special dessert, which was a freshly made Napolean. Very rich. Wonderful service. We enjoyed talking to the owner.

    If the salad actually had the promised pine nuts and I'd had more ice in my tea, easily a 5. Spinach and grilled salmon were the perfect lunch on warm summer day. Cleansed the palate with lemon sorbet. Friend's bread pudding unexpected slice, but ice cream was "to die for" according to Pam Lilly.

    The Trading Post Cafe used to be my favorite restaurant in New Mexico, period ! The past couple of years though the wait staff has migrated from very friendly and genuine to being distant, trying to sell you on more wine or deserts, and sometimes even cold and unfriendly. This is sad, since this can be a vicious circle, less patrons, less money, lower quality staff, ..., and the cycle continues. Hopefully the owners, who themselves are wonderful chefs and people, will break this cycle and train their staff better, in particular on how important a smile and being genuine is to customer loyalty. If you have never been, check it out, the food is great.

    Delicious food, beautifully presented in a lovely, historic ambience. After a week of vacation we were growing weary of TexMex fare so it was a delight to find this place with a creative Italian flare. Sitting in the front dining room we could watch the kitchen working behind the bar, marveling at their collegial pace and grace under pressure. The cold soup was great, the bread home baked and the chicken crepes tasty. The tiramisu was good but the portion was way too small

    Normally we love the Trading Post, but the experience last night was more than lacking. When we arrived, our waitress did not introduce herself, nor did she bother to even talk to us all night, besides a kind of, "what do you want?" I had to ask for a glass of wine, never did she ask. I had to ask again about 30 minutes later because our server forgot. The water at our table was always low or empty and when our server came to fill up the water, only part way, she practically sat on my lap to reach for the other glasses. When the food arrived, one of the dishes was wrong and all were lacking in flavor, which is unusual for this restaurant we have come to love. We also all noticed the significantly smaller portions, from salad to entree, while the prices have remained the same. For dessert we ordered the Napoleon, which we have had before. Normally one would assume a Napoleon would have three layers but this time there were only two. We got coffee with our dessert but our waitress never even asked if we wanted a refill, instead she just dropped off the bill. Today we realized that we had been billed twice for our less than stellar experience. I really hopes management figures this out or they will lose many loyal customers.

    1. Really enjoyed the rosemary chicken, crab bisque, and ceasar salad with chicken. 2. Service was over the top. 3. Parking was too tight. 4. Staff should kindly ask other diners to take their lengthy cell phone conversations outside, as well as their laptop computers - which ruined the otherwise-cozy evening ambience.

    Had a lovely birthday dinner with freinds at this warm, friendly and consistent restaurant. Have eaten here many times and am always pleased with the creative specials, the friendly staff and the reasonable prices. The compimentary napoleon was a nice surprise and just as tasty as the rest of my dinner. Will be back for sure.

    A disappointing AND expensive dining experience. Love the room. The waitress was very polite. BUT oh my, the food. I ordered Minestrone to start. What I received was an overwhelming bowl of bow-tie pasta in a tepid and bland broth with a little shredded chicken and green bean on top. I looked at the waitress when she put it down and she just shrugged and acknowledged that it was strange. Then...Fettuccine Carbonara...luke warm overcooked fettuccine in a sauce of primarily heavy cream topped with smoked bacon and dried overcook chicken; chicken jerky. There are a couple schools of thought on Carbonara; Cream or No Cream. I am in the traditional NO CREAM bandwagon. With cream it is way too heavy and slimy. Is this "New Italian" cuisine the Trading Post is offering? I lived for years in New York so maybe I am jaded when it comes to Italian cooking. If you are going to break with tradition and change up the classics you had better do a darn good job of it or you just fall on your face. This meal was a disaster. I wanted to like the tiramisu. It was very tasty on it's own but had a soupy nasty tasting chocolate sauce like something out of a bottle from the grocer pooled all around and on top of it. With a glass of wine it was 60.00. The chef did seem distracted by a dining room visitor and kept turning up at this persons table making nice. It was just a bizarre display. A good example of neglecting customers AND kitchen duties to schmooze. Chef, rethink your recipes and focus.

    Always a superb meal in a real neighborhood restaurant. I had the chicken piccata, which was lightly breaded and moist, while my son had beef bourginon served on linguine. Both great dishes. Cost around $40/head, with starter and dessert. Stop by when you're almost in Taos!

    My Fettuccine alla Carbonara was quite good. Our server must have listed 10 specials they had that day. Most dishes are between $15 - $30. This restaurant should have a "$$$" price ranking in my opinion. If you park in the back, you can walk through a car port to the restaurant. This short cut isn't marked and is easily missed.

    This place came highly recommended by people and newspapers, not to mention the wall of prizes and degrees which plastered the wall. We were greeted promptly enough, and the place was buzzing with people and noise so I figured we were off to a good start, but then we got seated in the cold section and it was just downhill from there. It took our waitress ten minutes just to serve us water, another ten minutes to take our order and over forty minutes to receive our food. I ordered the rosemary chicken and received fried chicken that was dry, cold noodles and less than inspired green beans. My boyfriend also ordered a chicken dish and his dish had more rosemary than mine did, and even colder pasta and it didn't even resemble what we thought we were getting. We weren't offered bread or desserts, and she didn't seem interested that weren't really eating. The bill was close to $70 and we were wondering how it could possibly cost that much.

    The price was over the top, the food was 1 star at best the chicken and my wife got was dry, this place is not a good place to go unless you wanna throw away your money.

    I came here during a fun trip to Santa Fe. While on our way back from visiting the artist community of Tao's we stopped at the Trading Post for lunch. I ordered the Fettucine carbonara and it was good, call me traditional but i missed the pancetta that was supposed to be in it which was substituted for bacon. By all means i'm no bacon hater but carbonara has to have pancetta. Overall the whole meal was great and the service fantastic i'm just overreacting. They have a great wine selection as well with good bottles of wine.

    As good as it gets for lunch in Taos! Delicious home-made bread served with olive oil. Cold soups are divine! Main courses divine! There are always specials. (Don't miss the Friday special of fish and chips;) The chef and his wife are super friendly and the wait staff unfailingly helpful. We dine there at least 6-8 times a summer and love the outdoor patio in back. A must visit when in Taos.

    Top choice for a lively upscale menu for all sorts of grilled meats/fish as well as pastas. We were a large party and the staff worked well together attending to our craziness. This was even though it was quite busy on a Friday night! They had quite a few specials which we participated in and no complaints from any of our party. 3 areas to sit in including a large front bar area. Did not seem to be any bar scene and might have even been more for show and could have been filled with glasses and dishes but I did not pay that much attention. Maybe someone can update my lack of recall? Otherwise there were lots of 4 and 6 tops and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Walls covered in local art and available for purchase but in a tasteful way. While I did not see the wine list I did notice they were on Spectator's list (to some degree) so must have pretty good depth. We had a decent California Pinot Noir as well as a really nice Barbera. Not something I usually take part in but it was drinking very well. I wish I had the name! I would say there was a wonderful variety in dishes and with the depth of wine, I am sure there is something for everyone's tastes.

    It sounds like a tourist shoppe for purchasing kachina dolls and fake Navajo drums. But it's not! It's an Italian Restaurant! And so they realized this and instead of changing the name to something.....Italiany, they put up a big old painted banner out front, on the eaves that says "ITALIAN FOOD" or something like that. I forgot to snap a pic. I did however, take a picture of my dad's permanently grimed up hands trying to thunderclap a brownie sundae. We just chopped wood and got a brownie sundae as a reward. I've eaten there a few times. The food's good, the meatballs are great. Whatever. The house cat is still alive, and precocious (if that applies to old cats who are the age of human children). They offer Sage bread to prime your guts. It's far from the plaza and near to the hotel where I usually stay, which is a plus. The bar is nice but they could use some local beers. Oh, and great staff, great. The brownie sundae......I'll let the pictures of the brownie sundae speak.

    Wow, we were blown away by our dinner tonight. My husband and I came to Taos to ski and used Yelp to help us find restaurants. We were not disappointed. The Trading Post is unassuming but very inventive and eclectic. For starters, we had the grilled avocado, buffalo mozz cheese, asparagus on a bed of greens.....I know, amazing, right? We both ordered specials for dinner, ME: flounder on bed of spinach and pasta w/ sort of an italian/asian fusion sauce. HIM: Fennel chicken pasta. Sarah, our server, was super. She was fast, knowledgable and very sweet. The kitchen is open so you can see the chefs at work, very brave of them. Not your average italian restaurant, a huge cut above and worth the 10 minute drive south.

    We had lunch at the Trading Post on November 3. It's in a historic old building and it has a very cozy interior. Our Tuscan sandwiches were delicious and flling. I first had a cup of lobster bisque, which was a real treat. Plus, our server was terrific and very kind.

    A little more upscale than your average Taoseno restaurant, but not overly expensive. The food is creative and fresh and the ambiance is mellow and inviting. It's a nice place to try something else besides New Mexican food.
